Anti –aging: as easy as ABC.
In the past I have written about the exciting discovery that regular chiropractic care may well protect your DNA from ageing…and that could be very good for you.
In particular the part of DNA that seems to be important for a long and healthy life is a part called the telomere. The longer the telomere the better. The telomere is a bit like a bank account though – but one that can only be depleted not added to. Every time your cells divide the telomeres get shorter. Bad habits and bad nutrition shorten them faster. Good habits and good nutrition prevent shortening.
Chiropractic seems to be more beneficial than nutrition in this aspect of keeping well.
A second strategy is to boost the amount of glutathione in your cells. Glutathione is what is known as an anti-oxidant. While you may have heard of vitamins A, C and E as anti-oxidants, glutathione may be new to you. It is not that glutathione is a new discovery – its very old. Glutathione is possibly the most important antioxidant in the body – not least because it protects telomeres from shortening. Glutathione is one of the basic substances found in all living matter – but it is unfortunately not digested, or gets broken down by digestion – I’m not sure which. The result is though that you can not take it in supplement form or get it from your diet – you have to make it yourself.
Until recently all you could do to increase glutathione was take supplements that encourage it to be made and exercise (yes another great benefit of exercise). OR – you can get it injected.
Over the last few years though a controversial new technology has arisen that supposedly increases glutathione levels in the body far quicker and far more than anything except injection. It is a homeopathic patch. I personally can not tell you if this works, I’d like to have the money to do some research on this. All I can tell you is that when I put these patches on people with particular problems related to glutathione deficiency in the clinic they often feel better within minutes. We currently sell these patches in the clinic for £4 each – or you can order them online – Lifewave Patches
So for simple anti-aging come in, get adjusted regularly and boost your glutathione.

Healthy Back Bags and Education
Healthy Back Bags and Education
As ever, there has been lots happening in the health news, which I’ll be blogging about later.
Some personally more exciting news is that I have asked to blog for the Healthy Back Bag Company. You can see what I’ve written so far here:
www.healthybackadvice.co.uk
The Healthy Back Bag company wanted someone to be able to answer back pain related questions for them, the questions I’ve answered so far are:
Is my shoulder higher on one side because I carry a heavy bag?
Is my back pain because I carry my toddler?
Is my back pain due to bad shoes?
Why is the Healthy Back Bag better than normal one-strap bags?
Unfortunately I don’t get a share of the profits in any increased sales!
Now the title of today’s email was EDUCATION. This is because I believe, and statistics back my up on this, - the more you know about what is wrong with you, or how you work (as a human) the better the outcome.
And I think I have failed you in this respect.
I know I send emails, and I’ve put up videos on Youtube...
http://drchrispickard.blogspot.com/2010/06/spinal-hygiene-exercises-for-natural.html
...and I talk to you when you come in for treatment, but what I’ve never done is give proper lectures or done workshops on chiropractic, spinal health, and it’s importance to you and your family.
This is why I’m now going to start doing talks once a month at the clinic, with my associate chiropractor Dr Rachel Wharton.
These talks will be ideal for new patients, old patients who want to know more, or friends and family who you would like to know more.
The first of these will be on Monday 26th July, from 7.30 or 8. I’ll confirm the start time in the next day or two.
Call the clinic on 01707 662 704 or email us at BrookmansPark@thepainreliefcentres.co.uk to let us know how many people you’ll be bringing along.
I know it’s quite short notice, but I want to start getting into a regular habit, and I like to start quickly.
See you soon.

Subluxation
Well recently the GCC (General Chiropractic Council) made what I thought was a blatent disregard of all the facts. I've always been concerned about the direction the GCC was taking the chiropractic profession in the UK, because in my opinion the GCC is more likely to destroy the profession rather than protect the public.
It is my opinion that those in the GCC have little IDEA of what happens in a chiropractic clinic, and have little or no understanding of how a chiropractic adjustments works or the principles of chiropractic and should all be forced to read and attend a number of lectures on these subjects.
I refer them for instance to my summery of Dr James Chestnuts work and other theories, - All About Chiropractic
I also now ask all the GCC, BCA and other chiropractic bodies in the UK to read the following articles and comments:
US Chiropractor thinks GCC stupid
Dr Kent's brief comment on the GCC's latest
Dr Kent's Full Response (I hope they've read it)
Happy reading.

Lifestyle wins again
Lifestyle Wins Again for Better Health
Yet another study shows lifestyle change has a more dramatic effect on your health than any amount of drugs. (I'm talking about the chronic diseases that kill most westerners).
What is great about this particular research is that it highlights just how quickly positive efects happen.
A study at Brigham Young University found a combination of a 'healthy' diet and 30 minutes of cardio exercise a day dramatically decreased risks of cancer, diabetes and heart disease in just 6 weeks.
Maybe if they followed what I term a 'Human diet' (a hunter-gatherer diet) as outlined here - Human Diet with the types of exercise Al Sears recommends - PACE Program they would find even quicker and more profound results.

Cancer - is it a nutritional deficiency?
Cancer - Is It A Nutritional Deficiency?
So often your average medical doctor will laugh at the idea that diet and nutrition can help your health. This is largely helped by pharmaceutical companies doing everything they can to back rubbish research into the area of nutrition.
However, when the WHO comes out with a statement such as "85% of cancers are avoidable" and half of these are due to "nutritional deficiences in the Western diet" you would hope there might be something in the news, or that doctors might get interested.
But no.
I was speaking to a cardiac specialist last night about diet and nutrition. His opinion, after 10 years of in-depth research was that diet plays a huge role in human health and suspects that nutritional supplementation has a previously neglected important part to play.
He too found it frustrating that despite evidence that diet is a far more effective at preventinig heart disease than statins, his colleagues did not want to listen.
It's a strange world when those that are supposedly trained in human health take so little interest in it.
Oh well.

Because they care…
…about their bottom line, not you.
I wish I knew why medical doctors and the government carry on trusting the drug companies. This year alone pharmaceutical giants have been sued for causing thousands heart attacks in Scotland due to the drug Vioxx (a side effect they knew about), causing untold misery with the HRT Premarin (side effects they knew about) and are currently under investigation for causing the swine flu scare just to make money.
It seems however that there may be some things our government won’t swallow – and that is putting antibiotics on the shelves for all to buy.
Despite the facts that wide spread antibiotic overuse has lead to the emergence of superbugs like MRSA, two drug companies, Goldshield and Actavis, thought it would be a good idea to allow them to be sold over the counter.
Who knows where this would lead, and luckily the government have said no to this one.
It is another clear indication though that the drug companies main aim is not to make the world a healthier place, but a world full of people dying to get their drugs.
I wonder who has killed more – the so called ‘drug barons’ of Columbia, or the real drug barons. Actually we already know the answer – last year alone an estimated million people died from prescription drugs being taken properly.
