Spinach, Wonderful Spinach

Papers recently have reported that Popeye was right about the muscle strengthening power of spinach.  The secret is in the nitrates contained in the spinach.  It helps muscle cells become a lot more efficient, needing less oxygen, 5% less to be exact.  The amount needed is 300g a day, but most green leafy matter will contain nitrates too.  The effects can be realised after just 3 days.

The idea of eating more greens, especially raw, in order to produce more muscle power and greater endurance is not new to me.  A colleague of mine in Canada convinced one of his marathon running patients to swap from a traditionally used carbohydrate rich diet and ‘carb loading’ to a caveman, or stone age diet – meats, eggs, nuts, seeds, berries, fruits and lots of raw veg.  The effect was a 1/2 hr faster marathon.

This makes total sense to me as the food we evolved eating provides a much cleaner fuel than modern processed wheat or rice based carbs.

In the News This Week.

Even simple pain killers, known as NSAID’s like ibuprofen can increase strokes and heart attacks:

It’s strange how one NSAID – aspirin is supposedly good for you, yet all the others increase cardiovascular problems and strokes!  Could it be that researchers deliberately lied about aspirin?

Scotland urges pregnant mothers to take vitamin D3 as it has such an important effect on health, from multiple sclerosis to heart disease:

..and then - Children prescribed antibiotics are twice as likely to develop digestive problems:

Young children who are treated with antibiotics are twice as likely to develop digestive problems later on, according to new scientific research. The study, published in the health journal Gut, looked at the medical and prescription records of 580,000 children over an eight-year period. It found that youngsters who had been given one course of medication such as penicillin or other antibiotic treatments by the age of three or four were 1.84 times more likely to be diagnosed later on with bowel disease than those who had never received the drugs. The risk of developing the illness increased by 12 per cent every time the medicines were prescribed, the study found.

So are there alternatives to pain killers and antibiotics that work , and do not lead to worse health?  Of course there are.  Chiropractic can help with both, and there are plenty of other options too.  If you know of anyone, young or old, in pain or in “need” of antibiotics then pass on my number, I’d love to help – 01707 662 704.
