Back Pain and Emotions

Back Pain and Emotions
..or Chiropractic – its not all in the back!

Back pain and emotions go hand in hand, and one can be the cause of the other.
Common emotions caused by chronic back pain include depression, irritation and hopelessness. Likewise, if you are under constant emotional stress some people tighten their back muscles, resulting in back pain.

So what can you do to resolve emotional back ache?

The rule of thumb is to listen, learn, and take action. Listen to what you are trying to tell yourself, learn what is stressing you out, and put a plan of action together – a strategy to cope.

This can include avoiding unnecessary stress – such as the stress you put upon yourself, or it can be learning active ways to resolve stressful situations. It can also include building your resistance to stress, or your ability to handle more.

The most effective ways to build your resilience are of course things like exercise and meditation which actively turn off the stress centres of the brain.

Then there are simple techniques such as EFT (emotional freedom technique) or TFT (thought field therapy) – more about which can be found in the patients only section of the website: (OH15)
http://www.thepainreliefcentres.co.uk/Patients_Only_Download_Area.asp

If you want to really find out the power of EFT then I strongly recommend contacting Glynes Mewton at www.supportedjourneys.co.uk or on 07960042387.

One of the great things about chiropractic, especially when combined with Cranial Laser Reflex Technique, is that it too works on turning off the stress centres in the brain, as well as working directly on physical issues too.

Over the years I’ve had many people come to me feeling low, even depressed, but as their spine starts moving more, and they make consistent, steady improvements in lifestyle their mood improves. I once had a manic depressive say he stopped getting such roller coaster rides of emotions once he started chiropractic.

If you want to discuss any of this further, or feel your aches and pains have a more emotional rather than physical cause, then give the clinic a call today – 01707 662 704 - and we’ll figure out an appropriate strategy for you.

Healthy Back Bags and Education

Healthy Back Bags and Education
As ever, there has been lots happening in the health news, which I’ll be blogging about later.

Some personally more exciting news is that I have asked to blog for the Healthy Back Bag Company. You can see what I’ve written so far here:
www.healthybackadvice.co.uk

The Healthy Back Bag company wanted someone to be able to answer back pain related questions for them, the questions I’ve answered so far are:

Is my shoulder higher on one side because I carry a heavy bag?
Is my back pain because I carry my toddler?
Is my back pain due to bad shoes?
Why is the Healthy Back Bag better than normal one-strap bags?

Unfortunately I don’t get a share of the profits in any increased sales!

Now the title of today’s email was EDUCATION. This is because I believe, and statistics back my up on this, - the more you know about what is wrong with you, or how you work (as a human) the better the outcome.

And I think I have failed you in this respect.

I know I send emails, and I’ve put up videos on Youtube...
http://drchrispickard.blogspot.com/2010/06/spinal-hygiene-exercises-for-natural.html
...and I talk to you when you come in for treatment, but what I’ve never done is give proper lectures or done workshops on chiropractic, spinal health, and it’s importance to you and your family.

This is why I’m now going to start doing talks once a month at the clinic, with my associate chiropractor Dr Rachel Wharton.

These talks will be ideal for new patients, old patients who want to know more, or friends and family who you would like to know more.

The first of these will be on Monday 26th July, from 7.30 or 8. I’ll confirm the start time in the next day or two.

Call the clinic on 01707 662 704 or email us at BrookmansPark@thepainreliefcentres.co.uk to let us know how many people you’ll be bringing along.

I know it’s quite short notice, but I want to start getting into a regular habit, and I like to start quickly.

See you soon.

Chiropractic and Pain Relief

What is Chiropractic?

Depending who you ask, you will get a different answer, but in a nutshell, Chiropractic is a system of healthcare that places major emphasis on the (structural and functional) relationship between your spinal column and your spinal cord and brain. Simpler still, chiropractors believe the primary system that effects your health is your nervous system as it connects your brain to every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, joint and organ in the body.

How and Why it Works,

Originally chiropractors had the simplistic notion that a bone out of place in the spine will trap spinal nerves, therefore if you take pressure off the nerve by moving the bone health is restored. Chiropractors call these ‘bones out of place’ subluxations.

Looking at the anatomy of the spine, this seems a reasonable assumption, but more modern research into neuroanatomy and neurology suggest it may be more complicated than that. For instance one of the most puzzling episodes in chiropractic history where the apparent effectiveness of the Chiropractic Asylums in treating psychological disorders. One psychologist who examined records of the Palmer Chiropractic College Asylum discovered that people who would today be labelled as schizophrenic where being completely cured without drugs in as little as two weeks!

Now, thanks to some pretty invasive brain research we can understand why. Electronic stimulators were placed in a part of the brain normally stimulated by movement (especially spinal movement) – the vermis - in 11 psychiatric patients who had illnesses of 6 to 23 years duration. After initial treatment 10 were functioning without medication or any other treatment, except the vermis stimulation. [Experiment quoted by James Chestnut in The 14 Foundational Premises, more info available at http://www.thewellnesspractice.com]

The chiropractic asylums used regimes of daily physical exercise, social interaction and multiple spinal adjustments – way ahead of their time!

This also explains why often people feel so good after chiropractic treatment, even if they came in feeling fine!

Why is Chiropractic Effective in Treating Pain

It seems to be this double whammy of directly moving joints, improving the mechanics of the area and the effects in the brain that make chiropractic so effective.

The research to supporting it's effectiveness

Any particular types of pain it is effective in helping with

The most typical types of pain are low back pain, neck pain, headaches and nerve entrapments. Due to its prevalence in society the most research has been done on low back pain, though a large study on headaches was conducted in the states.

Any good anecdotes of it's effectiveness.

Any chiropractor will be able to supply you with miracle stories, here are three of mine

Mr X came to me having suffered severe whiplash injuries to his low back and neck from a car accident he had several weeks earlier and was not improving. The first treatment Mr X came in on two crutches, the second treatment 1 crutch, the third a walking stick, and by the fourth was walking normally. This impressed the elderly neighbours who had been watching his daily struggle from his car to our office ease with remarkable speed.
Ms Y came into see me a few days before her birthday having suffered with severe headaches and migraines for a number of years. Ms Y suffered some kind of pain daily, and would often have to resort to morphine based drugs. 3 treatments and 5 days later years of pain and drug use ended. Ms Y has needed a few ‘top-up’ treatments over the past 4 years, but has never had a return of such crippling or long lasting pain.

Mrs Z is less of a sudden success, but is a great example of persistence. Mrs Z, in her 50’s was on morphine patches for neck, shoulder and back pain, of 2 years duration. X-rays revealed arthritis in the neck, but not severe enough to offer an operation. The doctors and specialists were doing all they could, but the pain was worsening and ever more drugs were needed. Apart from continuously wearing morphine patches, Mrs Z was also on gabapentin, and paracetemol. Repeated chiropractic adjustments over the course of 3 months saw an end to the morphine use. Another 3 months and goodbye to gabapentin. Another 3 months and off the paracetemol and discharged by her pain specialist. Mrs Z is now more active, has more energy and is looking forward to getting older instead of dreading it!
