Meditation and Diabetes

My most recent email covered a few topics quite briefly, which I have reproduced below, but with links to the original, fuller articles:

Meditation: A recent study has found that meditation halves the rate of heart attacks, strokes and other forms of death.  The study was on a couple of hundred people over 9 years.  The form of meditation used was the same one I’ve been practicing since my parents sent me on a course when I was 17 – Transcendental Meditation.  It’s very easy to learn.

Diabetes:  Some more scientists have discovered what I’ve been teaching for years – type 2 diabetes is COMPLETELY curable with the right diet – just not the one the NHS dieticians use!
If you want to know the diet I use then email me or ring the clinic on 01707 662 704

Fish Oils: More news on just how good they are for heart disease, decreasing inflammation and blood pressure.

Drugs: Yet more reasons to find another answer to your symptoms.  This time even simple pills like Piriton, used for hayfever, when combined with other common drugs can cause dementia and early death.  If you do know anyone that suffers with hay fever then please get them to give me a call on 01707 662 704 as I know someone who can cure it – guaranteed.

Cholesterol:  new research from Japan confirms what all the other major cholesterol studies have found – increased cholesterol is GOOD, not bad.  Please let your GP know and ask them to read this article: Tsuji H. Low serum cholesterol level and increased ischemic stroke mortality. Archives of Internal Medicine. 2011;171(12):1121-1123.

Osteoporosis

Bone Health

Having just been asked by a patient to give some advice on osteoporosis, I found I had not already written an article, so here is a good little overview.

Bone is a living tissue.

It is continually being renewed by two types of cell:
Osteoclasts – break down old bone
Osteoblasts – build new bone

There are approximately 1-10 million areas of bone rebuilding in our bodies at any given time.

As we age, especially women, it seems the break down of old bone goes faster then the new bone can be replaced.  Traditional HRT looks at slowing the break down of old bone.  However, after a few years this just leads to MORE old bone that is weak.

Just like the rest of the body bone tissue needs to be nourished and detoxified, so has a good blood and nerve supply.

Osteopenia and osteoporosis do not necessarily mean weak bone likely to fracture.  There are other factors which can be improved.

Eating more vegetables (and possibly less low quality meat) will improve bone density.

Low progesterone is much more linked to low bone density than low oestrogen (Sellman and Sherill, Hormone Heresy: What Women MUST Know About Their Hormones, 1998)

Any progesterone replacement MUST be with natural progesterone, not synthetic progesterone.  Synthetic progesterone is extremely toxic.

Progesterone improves osteoblast activity.

The Bantu of Africa have the lowest osteoporosis rate of any culture.  They also consume very low calcium!

The Japanese also suffer less osteoporosis and consume less calcium than the West.

What takes calcium out of bones?
Alcohol
Antacids that contain aluminium
Antibiotics
Caffeine
Excessive meat
Excessive homogenized, pasteurised milk (yes, that’s right, modern processed milk is as good for you as coke, skimmed milk is worse than whole milk both for osteoporosis AND heart disease)
Too much omega 6 fats
Not enough omega 3 fats
Too much time inside (lack of vitamin D3)
Too much sitting
Lack of weight bearing exercise
Stress
Too much sugar
Tobacco

What do you need to build bone:
Phosphorous
Magnesium
Manganese
Zinc
Copper
Boron
Silica
Various vitamins, esp D3
Omega 3 fats
High quality protein

Minerals have to be in proper balance, there are a few options if you wish to supplement:
Calcium Hydroxyappetite Crystals – made from bone
Milk Calcium – extracted without homogenisation and pasteurisation and including other minerals

Eat a diet high in veg, (over 50%), contains a handful of nuts and seeds, some fruit and berries, little ‘carbohydrate only’ food, and contains only high quality proteins.
Supplement with pharmaceutical grade fish oil, D3, a good multivitamin and mineral or simply one of the calcium supplements I mentioned.

The best thing to do is get weight bearing exercise 3 x week, such as walking uphill, weight training, or cycling with high resistance.

You may also want to try Natural Progesterone cream – just ask us for more details – 01707 662 704

In addition to providing calcium for bones, milk calcium, especially when mixed with high quality whey protein helps burn fat, and improve lean muscle mass.

Both these can be got here:
or you can just pop into the clinic!

Exercise Your Heart really Needs

Well, I’m cheating, as I’m going to be cheeky and just reproduce an email I got from Dr Al Sears back in 2009 -

Dear Christopher,

Is your doctor telling you to take an aspirin for your heart?

If so, you may be putting your life at risk.

Aspirin is fine for the occasional headache, or to take while you are having a heart attack, but NOT as a daily preventive medication.

Yet each day nearly 50 million Americans take an aspirin, hoping to prevent a heart attack.

I’ve never been a fan of using daily doses of drugs to prevent disease. Especially when there are safe, natural alternatives. And this new information about aspirin confirms my beliefs.
A new Scottish study reveals that aspirin has no effect on preventing strokes, coronary and vascular events. Even worse, daily aspirin use increases internal bleeding.

In other words, taking aspirin daily won’t save you from a heart attack.

But “daily aspirin therapy” is the medical marketing idea that just won’t die, no matter how many people do. Here are just a few of its clinically-proven dangers:
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Stroke
  • Major abdominal bleeding
  • Ulcers
  • Cataracts
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Kidney failure
Fortunately, there are natural alternatives to aspirin that really work. Some have been around since the B.C. era. So consider the wisdom of our ancestors before taking your next aspirin.

White willow bark is the original aspirin. It comes from a tree native to Europe and Asia. The medicinal use of willow bark dates back to the ancient Egyptians who took advantage of its anti-inflammatory power.

Even the so-called “father of medicine,” the ancient Greek doctor Hippocrates, had his patients chew on white willow bark to reduce fever and inflammation.

Here’s why it works. White willow bark contains salicin, the same curative compound found in aspirin. But there’s a big difference.

White willow bark won’t upset your stomach. It won’t cause bleeding in your GI tract. Your body first has to extract the salicin from the plant’s natural fibers, slowing its release into your system. White willow bark stays in your system longer and provides lasting relief.

And here’s a convenient way to enjoy the healing benefits of white willow bark. You can reduce inflammation by drinking white willow tea. You’ll find it in health and nutrition stores. Try a cup after breakfast and at bedtime.

Plus, there are plenty of ways to lower your risk of heart attack without taking aspirin. Here’s what I recommend to avoid aspirin and do something healthy for your heart:
  • Get proper exercise. My PACE program is a great example. It protects your heart, pumps up your lung volume and burns fat in just minutes a day.
  • Supplement with Accel each day. CoQ10 has well-documented benefits for the heart. Accel, which is 8 times more bioavailable than regular CoQ10, is a heart-healthy powerhouse. My new formula includes the power of tocotrienols (the right Vitamin E), so it stays in your system longer for better heart health. It’s the only supplement I take each day.
To Your Good Health,
Al Sears, MD

Walking Is The Ultimate Exercise

Physical exercise in general has a number of benefits for the health of your body:-

·         improves circulation, improves heart efficiency and maintains artery elasticity
·         tones respiratory muscles, improving exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
·         aids elimination of toxic and metabolic wastes by promoting perspiration and intestinal motility
·         stimulates endorphin release in the brain, fighting depression and improving our mood
·         regulates metabolism
·         neutralises stress
·         enhances immune function

Walking has even more benefits in addition to the above:-

·         it integrates and exercises the brain – requiring input from our balance receptors (mainly inner ear and jaw); proprioception from our feet, low back and neck; visual input and further information from pretty much everywhere else in the body.  This is why it takes babies so long to learn.
·         the opposite arm and leg movements help harmonise the whole nervous system – improving mental function and co-ordination.  Children with less co-ordination and learning difficulties like dyslexia tend to have been poor crawlers or walked too soon.  A simple exercise may be all that’s needed to correct these problems, even as an adult.
·         walking is the only exercise that properly exercises your sacroiliac joints in your pelvis, which are responsible for 70% of back pain
·         walking stimulates ‘cranio-sacral’ rhythm, which in simple terms means your brain and nervous system keep bathed in nutrients.  Cerebro-spinal fluid is the ‘blood’ of the nervous system, including the brain.  The heart does not pump this fluid so other mechanisms such as deep breathing and walking are employed.
·         May be the only acceptable pre-breakfast exercise.  You read that correctly, exercising while you are in a fasting state places your body under a great deal of stress and may be worse than not doing it at all!

Medical research has actually documented active walkers as having 20% less chance of getting breast cancer, a 30% less chance of getting heart disease, a 50% less chance of diabetes.  No drug can do this.

So how much do you have to do?  To improve your heart as little as half an hour, three times a week at a moderately brisk pace.  The most benefits are gained by walking 7 hours a week, so a few short walks at lunch time or in the evening, with longer ones at the weekend.

To top it all off, walking requires no special equipment, it costs nothing, you already know how to do it and you can do it anywhere.

Thank you for reading, now go and have a walk.
