"Your imagination is your preview of life's coming attractions."
— Albert Einstein
When it comes to health, or any aspect of life, many people find
it hard to change, because they rely on ‘will power’. Then
when they fail to make the change they lament that its all down
to a lack of will power.
Nothing could be further for the truth though. We all have will
power, lots of it, but most of us use it in the wrong way and
direct it at the wrong target.
As the quote from Albert Einstein hints, all the greatest
achievers in the world got there by using their imagination –
by visualising what they wanted and imagining themselves as they
would be, or doing the things they needed to do in order to get
what they wanted.
Planning things in your imagination is the vital first stage,
and you must repeatedly do it. It is also much, much easier
than doing the real thing, but what it achieves over time is a
change in your self image. When you have achieved the self image
of someone who eats healthily, exercises and doesn’t smoke it is
far easier to eat healthily, exercise and not smoke. If however
you are a lazy, junk food eating smoker, and that is how you see
yourself it will take huge efforts to change.
There is another vital ingredient that needs to be added to your
visualisation though before you can change your self image –
and that is emotion. There are many ways to get your emotions
charged up (see the Psycho-Cybernetics course for more details
http://tinyurl.com/y92d3vb )and many emotions that can be positively used.
The emotion that is best, according to Dr Maxwell Maltz, is
compassion.
Compassion is also that recommended in most religious texts, but
the Tibetan Buhddist tradition in particular puts a lot of
practice into eliciting compassion. Along with Dr Maltz’s
Pscycho-Cybernetics I thoroughly recommend everyone reads The
Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche -
http://tinyurl.com/ydhdfjv.
Quite a few patients have read this book after loosing a loved
one and found its wisdom helpful, I was certainly glad I had
read and practiced some of its techniques before my grandparents
died.
So getting back to a positive note, get your compassion going,
visualise yourself doing and behaving as you wish, add in some
more emotion, and practice daily morning and night. This will
help you change your self image, and you’ll find yourself
changing without will power!
Let me know how you go.
Best of Health
